Jewish Culture Tour
Kiev - Lviv - Brody - Drohobycz -
Chortkow - Chernivtsy - Medzhybizh - Berdichev - Odessa
The tour program is called "On the Ba'al Schem Tow's tails". It takes 15 days to
visit main places of Jewish culture in Western Ukraine.
You will walk through Kiev, Golda Meir's motherland, and see Babiy Yar monument.
In Lviv, where Sholem Alejchem was born, you will see the Old City,
the monuments of Janow concentration camp and ghetto victims, also the former Jewish hospital.
On the way to Brody where you will visit Jewish cemetery and Jewish gymnasium there is
a very beatiful Olesko castle with one of the most precious gobelin collection
in Europe.
Drohobycz is called Galizian Pensilvania or California. There you will visit the old sinagogue
and Jewish cemetery.
You proceed to Czortkow which was the place of khassid legacy which had a lot of adepts in Eastern Galizia.
Chernivtsy was the center of Jewish life in Bukowina. In 1908 the first lingustic conference
took place there where Yiddish was proclaimed the national Jewish language. You will visit the Diaspora - Museum
in Chernivtsy.
Medzhybizh was the most important Jewish city in Podolia during Polish period and has many
memorable places among them the monument of khassid founder Israel ben Elieser Ba'al
Schem Tow (1700 - 1760). There you will visit the ancient city and museum.
Also you will visit Vyzhnitsia, Chotin, Vinnytsia, Shargorod,Tulcin, Braclav.
In Berdichev, the place where Levi Isaak von Berdichev lived and the native Jewish capital of the most
faithful Jews in Russian Empire, you will see the cemetery where Berdichev rebbe monument is erected and
will honour St.Barbara church, in the cellars of which 960 political prisoners were
executed by Nazi among them huge number of Jews were buried in the common grave
behind the church.
The tour finishes in Odessa, the city where Isaak Babel lived. You will visit Luterature Museum and walk
through Moldavanka, "the block of poor people" with huge Jewish population. Also you will see
the only functioning sinagogue and visit the famous Opera House where Chaikovskiy,
Rimskiy - Korsakov, Glazunov and Shalyapin performed.
